花蓮太魯閣國家公園發生落石意外，持觀光簽證來台、35歲的日本靜岡縣男子白井寬之，當時騎著單車行經九曲洞隧道，遭突如其來一陣碎石砸中，嚴重顱內出血，當場陷入昏迷。因傷及腦幹，術後病情惡化，父親、未婚妻、弟弟得知後跨海前來，一直陪伴在旁，沒想到12日晚間仍傷重宣告不治。

事發於9日下午，台8線中橫公路173.4公里九曲洞附近落石崩落，造成2人受傷，新北三重一對騎機車的母女，女兒肩膀遭擦傷，騎自行車的白井寬之則是頭部被砸中、陷入昏迷，在地上留下一長條血跡，緊急送醫。據悉，他本來是前來花蓮參加自行車賽事，挑戰中橫公路，沒想到賽前卻遭落石擊中，意外客死他鄉。

花蓮慈濟醫院表示，白井寬之送醫時已經呈現重度昏迷狀態，立即啟動創傷小組，斷層掃描發現，他的前額古籍上額骨有嚴重骨折，骨頭凹陷壓迫到腦部額葉處，腦幹還有瀰漫出血，4天後仍回天乏術，於12日晚間8時50分宣告搶救無效，不治過世。

嚴重顱內出血，傷及腦幹，白井寬之術後一直沒有脫離險境，父親、弟弟和未婚妻立刻從日本飛來花蓮，12日晚間也在旁陪伴，難過地婉拒媒體採訪，將在處理完後事後返日。對此，公路總局向《中央社》表示，將依例致上10萬元慰問金，後續並協助家屬，討論是否申請國賠。
